Dear Woman

Dear Woman,

I’m not sure you realise how lucky you are.

Granted, you have an illness that will never go away.

And to be fair it’s pretty serious.

But it is an illness that you can reduce the acceleration of and in turn prolong your life.

All you need to do is give up smoking.

You have been told that you need to give up smoking to stop this illness getting worse.

Yet, there you are, still nipping out for a fag.

You may tell us that you are now only smoking 3 fags a day.

It’s 3 too many.

Quite frankly, I don’t believe it’s only 3.

I know it can be difficult to give up smoking.

I’m not saying it’s easy.

There is lots of help out there!

This isn’t a whinge about people in general smoking.

But your life depends on it!

That’s not even an exaggeration!

It’s not an excuse you know, to get out of work.

There is no need to act so proud of it!

I swear sometimes you’re almost bragging about it!

I’m not sure you realise how lucky you are.

Do you know what?

You’re getting on my tits!

It’s so annoying watching you go out for a cigarette.

It’s your life so I’m not really that arsed what you do with it.

But when I think there are people who have illnesses they have no control over.

Illnesses that will not go away.

That no matter what they do they won’t get better.

People who would do anything, just to be told by someone, if they gave something up they would live longer.

That it wouldn’t get any worse.

People that value their lives.

Do you not value yours?

People whose families struggle to watch their loved ones in pain.

Who have had to make sacrifices.

That have to deal with this horrible situation they are in, this illness that they don’t have the chance to keep at bay.

My god!

It just doesn’t seem fair somehow that you don’t understand the seriousness of it all.

That you have the chance to make the illness stop and others don’t.

I feel like screaming!

Does that woman not realise how lucky she is?
